Oh what a can a restaurant get away with for the virtue of having a really nice location and a 'British Pub' to its name! Princess Pub & Grill commands the south-east corner of Cedar and India in the heart of Downtown San Diego's very chic neighborhood of Little Italy. It boasts of having 'the best fish and chips in San Diego'. After having experienced the place a few times, I have to say that the slogan rings about as true as Fox News' 'Fair and Balance' and CNN's 'American's Most Trusted News Network.' In other word, Schiesdreck.. (... Sprechen Sie Schweizerdeutsch?). This is generally a well decorated pub with live music and a good size foo menu. It is spacious and pretty cozy with a nice fireplace and flat screen tv's... Sitting inside rather defeats the point of dining in Little Italy, though. You can get brick fireplace and good sport-channel oriented tv monitors at any other pub in San Diego. In Little Italy, you really want to sit out front and people watch! This is the most pedestrian-friendly part of Downtown San Diego... The City even puts out comfortable chairs on the sidewalks for walkers to sit and watch the scenery (you hardly get that elsewhere in our teemed-with-homeless Downtown areas). They serve anything from the traditional English food like Cornish pasties and kidney pies to American pub favorites burgers, fish & chips, grilled cheese sandwich... and a good selections of soups and salads. The Fish and Chips is the star of the menu. I've had it twice and, though the bricks of cod never stink, they still don't have anything on the fish and the really crisp fries you can get at The Tin Fish or The Fish Market in Gaslamp Quarters. Fries here are mushy and the cole slaw that comes with it rather bland. The kidney pie is pretty good, though. The bar seems well stocked, though service can be quite spotty.... depending heavily on the number of steins of beer the bartender has already had before you start ordering your stuff. I've known a few Britishers in my life, and none are as fond of being the embodiment of Britain's perpetually rainy weather as the lot I find at Princess Pub & Grill in Little Italy. You can walk in from a bright and sunny day, and they would still act like it's sleeting outside. The dining crowd is usually pretty nice, though, being mostly on the mature side. There's a dart throwing area (I think they even hold competitions there sometimes). All in all, this is a cozy place to hang at, nursing a beer while people watching or catching up with some friends (you'll hardly ever be bothered by the waiting staff) in Little Italy San Diego. I'd suggest doing the eating elsewhere, though. There are quite a few better chow to be had for the same price on the same block of India Street (you can lunch here for $17 or dinner for $20... if you don't drink a lot).
