Television might be dying a slow death due to the explosive growth of online entertainment such as YouTube and its many spin-offs, but don't call the coroner just yet because there are still many quality TV shows out there, and there is some gold to be found on both mainstream and cable networks that still make it worthwhile to turn on the old TV once in a while. Want to know what you are missing? Check out this list of the top 10 TV shows today for some viewing suggestions: 10 - Breaking Bad - Many out there will not even have heard of this show, and that is a shame because it is a true gem with original ideas that helps differentiate it from dozens of other cookie cutter shows on TV today. Brian Cranston, best known for his work as Hal in the hit comedy Malcolm in the Middle, puts in an Emmy worthy performance as Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who is hit with the crushing news that he has lung cancer. It is never a good time to get that news, but the timing is made even worse as he also learns that he and his wife are expecting their second child. Desperate to earn some money to provide for his family after he dies, he teams up with a former student and current drug dealer Jesse, utilizing his chemistry knowledge to cook incredibly pure crystal meth. His life spins further and further out of control as his criminal lifestyle forces him to kidnap and kill in attempt to keep his secret from both his family and the authorities. Breaking Bad is one of those shows that is simultaneous implausible, yet strangely believable. It will be interesting to see where they take the series in season two. 9 - Lost - There are many critics of the popular ABC TV show Lost that claim that Lost has lost its way. With so many characters and plotlines it is little wonder that even the writers have trouble tying all the loose threads together. However, in Season 5 of Lost they seem to be working towards wrapping up all those loose ends, and are back on track with the formula that has made the show such a smash hit in its first season. Ben Linus is still the puppet master, pulling the strings of Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid as he continues to follow a plan that is known only to him. Meanwhile back on the island Sawyer, Locke and the others are caught in a temporal anomaly that sends them shooting randomly through time. Lost really seems to have regained its mojo this year and still merits a deserving spot on the list of the top 10 TV shows today. 8 - 30 Rock - Tina Fey is one of Hollywood's golden girls right now, and her magic touch is working wonders on the NBC comedy 30 Rock. Since it aired in 2006 the show has been showered with critical acclaim, racking up 5 Golden Globe wins and an impressive 9 Emmy awards. The show follows the misadventures of a team of producers, directors, writers and actors as they work behind the scenes of a popular live action sketch comedy show. Alec Baldwin again shows his comedic skills and plays the perfect counterpoint to Tina Fey's character. Yes, the sitcom certainly isn't enjoying the lofty popularity it did in the 80s when The Cosby Show, Cheers and Night Court ruled the roost, but 30 Rock is proof that there is still a place for the sitcom amongst all the crime drama and reality TV. People still love to laugh, and 30 Rock fits the bill perfectly. 7 - 24 - It is hard to believe that a TV show with such a unique, yet seemingly limited premise is still thriving in its 7th season, but the producers of the hit show have again managed to inject some freshness into the series that many predicted would flash and burn out just a few seasons in. Kiefer Sutherland is back as Jack Bauer, and this time he isn't working for CTU, because CTU is no more. There are a few surprises early in season 7 and the writers have done a brilliant job of keeping their audience guessing, trying to figure out who is on what side, and if there is truly anyone that Jack Bauer can trust. 24, as always, is packed with action, and it will have you on the edge of your seat each and every episode. 6 - The Office - NBC did an absolutely brilliant job with the casting for this hilarious sitcom, and those initial decisions have paid huge dividends over the life of The Office so far. Based on the British show of the same title it seemed hard to believe that anyone could fill the shoes of Ricky Gervais, but NBC struck gold with the decision to put funny man Steve Carell in the lead role as boss Michael Scott. Dwight, played by Rainn Wilson also stacks up admirably against Gareth, who played the second in command role in the British series. Jim, Pam, Ryan and the rest of the cast are all fantastic as well, and the writing is top notch. I am surprised by how few people I know that actually watch this series because it is arguably the funniest show on television. If you aren't watching The Office already then you definitely need to catch up. 5 - The Simpsons - No list of the top 10 shows on TV would be complete without this animated classic. Homer Simpson, his wife Marge, and kids Bart, Lisa and Maggie are even more iconic than the Flintstones were in their day. The Simpsons have had an incredible run and it is staggering to believe that they are now in their 21st season. Not only have they been a hit TV show for all that time, but The Simpsons recently made the jump to the big screen, where the animated yellow family racked up more than $500 million worldwide. The creative talent of Matt Groening is truly mind-blowing as he just continues to deliver fresh, witty dialog and plot lines after all this time. Rumor has it that season 21 will be the last for The Simpsons, but whatever happens, when the dust finally settles on this show it will be remembered as one of the greatest TV shows of all time. 4 - Californication - This definitely is not a show for the whole family to sit down and watch, but if you are looking for edgy, sexually charged material that sets itself apart from the bland fare that dominates network television then Showtime's Californication is for you. David Duchovny completely dispels the notion that he has been typecast for life as Fox Mulder, this time playing Hank Moody, a sardonic, sex-crazed writer from New York who has been transplanted to Los Angeles where he engages in continual sexual misadventures in between goes at an on again off again relationship with love of his life, Karen (played by Natascha McElhone). Duchovny really shines as Hank Moody, and the dry wit that Duchovny hinted at in the X-Files is out in spades in Californication. The dialog is top notch, and every episode will have you cracking up. The supporting cast is wonderful as well, with best friends Marcy (Pamela Adlon) and Charlie Runkle (Evan Handler) stealing the spotlight in many scenes. Callum Keith Rennie's turn as Lew Ashby in season 2 of Californication is spot on as well. All in all, if you are looking for a show with an adult edge then you should definitely give Californication a try. Just be warned though, when I say adult I mean adult. This show pulls no punches, with full nudity, very coarse language, and plenty of graphic sexual scenes. 3 - Entourage - For all you guys out there not watching Entourage, get your heads out of the sand! This classic buddy show follows the adventures of Vincent Chase, Johnny Drama, Turtle and E, four guys from the mean streets of New York who are living the big life in Hollywood. Vincent Chase, played by Adrian Grenier takes the lead role as an up and coming movie star. E, short for Eric Murphy is played by Kevin Connolly, and he manages Vince's career. Kevin Dillon does a masterful job as Johnny Drama, Vince's older brother and also an actor who enjoys limited fame as a one-time member of the cast of the cult show Viking Quest. Turtle is the last member of Vince's Entourage. Turtle is the classic hanger-on. He spends most of his time smoking pot, and busting Drama's chops, and is always good for a couple of laugh-out-loud one-liners per episode. It is Vincent's manager Ari Gold who really steals the show, however. Played to perfection by Jeremy Piven, agent Ari Gold is the epitome of the arrogant, crass Hollywood agent that everyone loves to hate. Ari, along with his gay assistant Lloyd really take the show to the next level. Vince, E, Drama and Turtle make the show good, but it is Ari Gold that makes Entourage great. If you haven't seen it yet, definitely take the time to check it out. Easily one of the best shows on TV today. 2 - Family Guy - While Family Guy might not go down in cartoon history the way The Simpsons will the fact remains that this is one of the funniest shows, animated or no, to hit broadcast television in a long time. Peter Griffin, his wife Lois, his kids Meg, Chris, and Stewie and his talking dog Brian are all hilarious in this bizarre comedy from the twisted mind of Seth MacFarlane. The show takes the edginess of The Simpsons to a whole new level, really pushing the boundaries of political correctness and good taste. Some may be offended at the show's crude humor, but they really need to lighten up. Family Guy is non-stop laughter, and today's sparse TV offerings could definitely use more of that. 1 - Dexter - As you can see by my top 4 picks on the list of the top 10 TV shows right now I am a fan of edgier, adult content. Dexter, based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, is one of the most complex characters to ever grace the small screen. Dexter, played by the talented Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under fame, is a serial killer who works as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami police department. However, he is not some off-the-wall psycho with an unslakeable thirst for blood. Dexter has a rigid code of conduct that dictates who he will or will not kill, a code that was drilled into him by his late father, also a former police officer. He only goes after other serial killers, and in his twisted way he makes the world a better place. The supporting cast in Dexter is brilliant as well, particularly his sister Debra Morgan, a foul-mouthed lady cop played by Jennifer Carpenter. The show features numerous twists and turns, and more than its fair share of gore. Dexter is not for the weak-stomached, but if you are looking for a show with production value as great as any Hollywood movie then you definitely need to give it a shot. Dexter is the best show on TV today, and easily takes the top spot on this list of the top 10 TV shows to watch right now. |
