COMMENTARY | Yesterday, as a small group of Atlanta Falcons fans came to my house to watch the game, a former NFL football player in attendance who keeps up with the news shocked me with a story: "I read that Fox News Channel isn't broadcasting President Obama's Inauguration. They claim they are doing 'routine maintenance.'" Opinions went back and forth, based upon the ideology of the speaker. Liberals condemned Fox News for acting like sore losers. Conservatives defended the right of the channel to do maintenance whenever they wanted to, and figured conservatives wouldn't be watching the inauguration anyway. It sounded as rude as defeated New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick blowing off the post-game interview with CBS. That night, I looked up the story. Sure enough, several websites came up (see one here, and another here) which relayed the same story. It included a quote from the well-known Roger Ailes at Fox News. One even cited the reputable magazine "The New Yorker" as a source. I saw NBC 12 from Richmond had a headline touting the story. The hyperlink shows the story headline, but as you can see here, the page no longer exists. So I thought I would play political mythbuster and check it out for myself. I went to "snopes.com," which claimed that it was a hoax, the creation of humorist writer Andy Borowitz, who contributes to The New Yorker. But snopes.com isn't foolproof, so it was time to do the acid test: watch the election coverage for myself. Sure enough, it was covered on their "Fox News Presents American Election" as well as on radio and Latino.Foxnews.com. Of course, they included some snarky comments like President Barack Obama using the word "I" more than any president. Research of mine and my students from his keynote address of 2004 showed much fewer self-references than most other keynote speakers, but maybe he's "evolved" since becoming president. They also tried to use every unemployment figure, except for the unemployment rate itself, to show how there are 2 percent fewer people working than four years ago. But the election's over, so it doesn't really matter. But critics of Fox News Channel need to check their sources first before slamming the conservative broadcast source. John A.
